Need a good book. Any ideas?

Friday, July 17, 2009

I need a good book to read - a book that would throw me into a world filled with its characters, that are entangled in their web of emotions. The last time I had read something so riveting was A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.

The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai failed to excite me, while The Great Indian Novel by Shashi Tharoor hasnt been lucky enough to get my complete attention. I have started the latter book several times (over five times), each time making it to several pages ahead of my previous stop, followed by a long break during which I would forget the intricacies associated with each characater, and then the whole cycle began all over again.

Riches Among the Ruins, though financial in nature (it is about a bond trader making a killing in emerging markets), was very engaging. Alas, I had to leave the hard bound book in India coz I was already carrying obese bags (bags that breach the weight restriction).

On another flight trip this evening, I looked through my very little book collection (I seem to have more of e books which I hate to read) and havent found any interesting dramas beseeching me to enter the world of their characters.

So my friends, any ideas???

If you're interested in romantic fiction, you can try any of Jane Austen's novels. You have been tagged: http://rads-blogazine.blogspot.com/2009/07/tag4.html

Dare i may to suggest Ayn Rand, you probably have read her books, but if you haven't, give 'Atlas Shrugged', 'The Fountainhead' a read.
They are worth spending a few afternoons over.

@Vimal - even I am glad that she commented
@Ameya - I read 'We, the living' and 'The Fountainhead' while I was in college. Now, I dont think I am ready to read something that is so difficult to read through, be it for literary reasons or for its abstractedness. Thanks for visiting my blog and suggesting the books :) You never know, one day, I might end up reading these.

I am not so much of a book person. But I could suggest to you a few Bollywood movies which have a 'world filled with its characters, that are entangled in their web of emotions'. Have you tried Hum Saath Saath Hai? Or Luck?

Mrunalini July 30, 2009 12:33 PM

Agree...movies are a great way to find that 'web' that you want to get entangled in...but when there is a lot of leisure, a book lets you be in the world at your own little pace :)
Havent watched luck..the reviews says its bad.. Watched Dev D today. Was a wonderful movie.
